Rank Centrality: Ranking from Pairwise Comparisons

چکیده
The question of aggregating pairwise comparisons to obtain a global ranking over a collection of objects has been of interest for a very long time: be it ranking of online gamers (e.g. MSR’s TrueSkill system) and chess players, aggregating social opinions, or deciding which product to sell based on transactions. In most settings, in addition to obtaining a ranking, finding ‘scores’ for each object (e.g. player’s rating) is of interest for understanding the intensity of the preferences. In this paper, we propose Rank Centrality, an iterative rank aggregation algorithm† for discovering scores for objects (or items) from pairwise comparisons. The algorithm has a natural random walk interpretation over the graph of objects with an edge present between a pair of objects if they are compared; the score, which we call Rank Centrality, of an object turns out to be it’s stationary probability under this random walk. To study the efficacy of the algorithm, we consider the popular Bradley-Terry-Luce (BTL) model (also known as the Multi Nomial Logit (MNL)) in which each object has an associated score which determines the probabilistic outcomes of pairwise comparisons between objects. We bound the finite sample error rates between the scores assumed by the BTL model and those estimated by our algorithm. In particular, the number of samples required to learn the score well with high probability depends on the structure of the comparison graph. When the Laplacian of the comparison graph has a strictly positive spectral gap, e.g. each item is compared to a subset of randomly chosen items, this leads to an order-optimal dependence on the number of samples. Experimental evaluations on synthetic datasets generated according to the BTL model show that our algorithm performs as well as the Maximum Likelihood estimator for that model and outperforms a recently proposed algorithm by Ammar and Shah (2011).

A Statistical Convergence Perspective of Algorithms for Rank Aggregation from Pairwise Data
There has been much interest recently in the problem of rank aggregation from pairwise data. A natural question that arises is: under what sorts of statistical assumptions do various rank aggregation algorithms converge to an ‘optimal’ ranking? In this paper, we consider this question in a natural setting where pairwise comparisons are drawn randomly and independently from some underlying proba...
متن کاملSync-Rank: Robust Ranking, Constrained Ranking and Rank Aggregation via Eigenvector and Semidefinite Programming Synchronization
Abstract. We consider the classic problem of establishing a statistical ranking of a set of n items given a set of inconsistent and incomplete pairwise comparisons between such items. Instantiations of this problem occur in numerous applications in data analysis (e.g., ranking teams in sports data), computer vision, and machine learning. We formulate the above problem of ranking with incomplete...
متن کاملRank Aggregation for Course Sequence Discovery
In this work, we adapt the rank aggregation framework for the discovery of optimal course sequences at the university level. Each student provides a partial ranking of the courses taken throughout his or her undergraduate career. We compute pairwise rank comparisons between courses based on the order students typically take them, aggregate the results over the entire student population, and the...
متن کاملWhen can we rank well from comparisons of \(O(n\log(n))\) non-actively chosen pairs?
Ranking from pairwise comparisons is a ubiquitous problem and has been studied in disciplines ranging from statistics to operations research and from theoretical computer science to machine learning. Here we consider a general setting where outcomes of pairwise comparisons between items i and j are drawn probabilistically by flipping a coin with unknown bias Pij , and ask under what conditions ...
متن کاملPassive and Active Ranking from Pairwise Comparisons
In the problem of ranking from pairwise comparisons, the learner has access to pairwise preferences among n objects and is expected to output a total order of these objects. This problem has a wide range of applications not only in computer science but also in other areas such as social science and economics. In this report, we will give a survey of passive and active learning algorithms for ra...
